Perception. No LSD needed.

1-10-2005

I am big on the idea of "perception". The way that we choose to see things directly reflects our own personal experience. The key word in the last sentence is "choose"....yes we have the ability to pick how we perceive things and it is the awareness of this ability that allows us to tap into something that is truly extraordinary.

Lately, as I have been trying to bull-shit my way through my personal statements for graduate school, the idea of perception has had a huge impact. When I finally decided to write on a topic, instead of trying to make myself look like a "solid" applicant by boosting my academic and personal "achievements", I tried to convey a message about how changing one's (my own) perception about things can lead to proactive change.

This change begins as an extremely personal experience, which then can manifest itself into other material outcomes. For instance, when I chose to see my hiatus from school as a positive period of personal growth rather than a period of aimless drifting, my reactions to situations shifted and opportunities opened up to me.

Still, the process of being aware of your own perceptions is not an easy task. The conditioned or reactive responses that we "expect" to happen are hard to let go of. They provide the comfort of predictability and familiarity. Yet, if personal growth is to occur, these reactive responses have to be turned into proactive assertions.

I still fight with this process everyday. I have tried to make it a priority to try to observe my reactions in all situations. Sometimes it makes me sick. Even though I try to be proactive in my undertakings, conditioned responses still manage to be a major player in my daily actions including interactions with others.

However, the result is worth the struggle. On the rare occasion that I actually am able to live the vision that I have sought, the feeling is none other than pure joy (not Joy like Mumbert's ex....that was misery…how ironic). What I have found is that proactive perception change is the result of focus and discipline. The search comes from within and ends within....and it is amazing. I am trying to see the so called "ordinary" as something completely different, and it can be...if one is willing to change his/her perception.
Anyways,
PEACE, LOVE, SEX, ROCK & ROLL.
